Segment alternatives: five compared on price, license and hosting

Segment alternatives differ on three things that decide both the bill and the migration: what you are billed for, whether you can run the code yourself, and how much platform comes around the pipe. This page compares Jitsu, RudderStack, Snowplow, PostHog and Hightouch against Segment Connections, using each vendor's own published pricing.

Pick by what you need:

  • Stay on Segment if you depend on a destination only Segment carries, you want reverse ETL from the same vendor, or each user sends thousands of events, which makes per-user billing cheaper.
  • Choose Jitsu if you want per-event billing at a published price, an MIT license you can self-host with no usage limits, and the option to filter events before they count toward the bill.
  • Choose RudderStack if you want per-event billing with Python transformations and tracking plans in the product, and an Elastic License 2.0 self-hosted edition is acceptable.
  • Choose Snowplow if you want a fully managed pipeline with in-stream enrichments and data-quality monitoring, and you are fine pricing it by quote after a 14-day trial.
  • Choose PostHog if what you need is product analytics, session replay and feature flags, not a pipeline that feeds other tools.
  • Choose Hightouch if your warehouse is the center of the stack and you want event collection, reverse ETL and audience building from one vendor, priced by quote.

What Segment does, and what an alternative has to replace

Segment Connections collects events from web, mobile, server and cloud-app sources and sends them to destinations, with unlimited destinations on every plan from a catalog Segment puts at 550+ pre-built destinations. It bills by monthly tracked users. Free covers 1,000 a month with 2 sources and 1 warehouse. Team starts at $120 a month for 10,000, then adds $12 per 1,000 up to 25,000, $11 per 1,000 up to 100,000 and $10 per 1,000 above that. Business is priced by quote. Reverse ETL is included, with 500,000 records a month on Free. The Segment pricing page lists no self-hosted plan.

A replacement has to do the same three jobs: accept the same tracking calls, route events to the tools and warehouse you already use, and do it at a price you can predict before the invoice arrives.

What you are billed for decides the bill

Segment counts people. Jitsu and RudderStack count events. Which model costs less depends on how many events each tracked user sends, so the table below holds that ratio at 100 events per user a month and moves the volume. PostHog bills per product, and Snowplow and Hightouch price by quote, so they are not in it.

Monthly workloadSegment TeamRudderStack GrowthJitsu Business
10,000 tracked users, 1M events$120$265$99
50,000 tracked users, 5M events$575$995$219
100,000 tracked users, 10M events$1,125$1,675$419

The arithmetic, from the published rates. Segment at 50,000 users is $120 for the first 10,000, plus 15 × $12 from 10,000 to 25,000, plus 25 × $11 from 25,000 to 50,000. At 100,000 users the last band is 75 × $11, for $1,125. Jitsu at 5M active events is $99 for the first 2M plus 3 × $40, and at 10M it is $99 plus 8 × $40. RudderStack publishes $265 for its 1M tier, $995 for 5M and $1,675 for 10M.

The ratio is the whole argument, and it cuts both ways. At 10,000 users sending 2,000 events each, 20M events a month, Segment Team stays at $120 and Jitsu Business is $99 plus 18 × $40, which is $819. A product with few users and heavy instrumentation is cheaper on Segment.

On Jitsu, events that a function filters out before any destination are not billed, unless the function made a fetch call first (pricing FAQ), so dropping health checks, test traffic or noisy events lowers the bill directly. On Segment Free and Team, every user who sends an event counts toward the MTU bill. Segment's Protocols, a Business-tier feature, keeps events blocked by a tracking plan out of the MTU count (Segment docs).

Open source or source-available

Of the five on this page, Jitsu and PostHog publish MIT-licensed editions. RudderStack's self-hosted edition is under Elastic License 2.0 and Snowplow's under SLULA 1.1, which are source-available licenses rather than open source. Snowplow offers a self-hosted pipeline that removes the non-commercial use restriction in SLULA 1.1. Segment and Hightouch list no self-hosted edition.

PostHog's edition is its analytics product, so it replaces Segment only if the analytics was the reason you bought Segment. The longer guide to self-hosted options is Best open-source CDPs and self-hosted Segment alternatives.

Where Segment is genuinely ahead

  • The catalog. Segment puts its catalog at 550+ pre-built destinations. Check every tool you send to against Jitsu's integrations before anything else: one missing destination you depend on decides it, and no price difference changes that.
  • Reverse ETL in the same plan. Segment includes reverse ETL from the Free plan, with 500,000 records a month.
  • Heavy users per person. When each user sends thousands of events, per-user billing wins, as the 20M-event example above shows.
  • The name. If a procurement team will only sign with a vendor it already knows, that is worth something real.

How to move, or not move

Jitsu's JavaScript library uses the same identify, track, page and group calls as Segment's analytics.js, and mobile apps keep Segment's open-source libraries pointed at a Jitsu domain. Nothing about how events are written has to change.

You do not have to remove Segment to test this. Keep Segment and send Jitsu a copy of every event, either by adding Jitsu's plugin to Segment's analytics.js or by pointing a Segment Webhooks (Actions) destination at Jitsu (setup guide). Both then run on the same data, and you compare the outputs and the two bills before deciding anything. The Segment compatibility page sets out each route, and Jitsu vs Segment covers billing in depth, with the cost at three volumes.

RudderStack's pricing page offers to put Segment users in touch with its migration specialists. Hightouch Events uses identify, track, page, screen and group events and writes them to tables in your own warehouse.

Questions people ask

Which Segment alternatives are open source? Of the five on this page, Jitsu and PostHog publish MIT-licensed editions. RudderStack's self-hosted edition is under Elastic License 2.0 and Snowplow's under SLULA 1.1, which are source-available licenses rather than open source.

Which Segment alternative is cheapest? It depends on events per user. At 50,000 tracked users sending 5M events a month, the published monthly prices are $575 for Segment Team, $995 for RudderStack Growth and $219 for Jitsu Business. When each user sends thousands of events, Segment's per-user billing comes out lower.

Can I try an alternative without removing Segment? Yes. Keep Segment and send Jitsu a copy of every event, either by adding Jitsu's plugin to Segment's analytics.js or by pointing a Segment Webhooks (Actions) destination at Jitsu.

Do Snowplow and Hightouch publish prices? Snowplow offers a 14-day free trial and prices its managed platform by quote. Hightouch prices its Composable CDP plans, which include Events, by quote, and its free tier covers reverse ETL with up to 2 active syncs.
